Getting Started

Tag Set-up

To get started with your Tag you’ll need:

– Your CleanSpace Tag

– A pen/any object to access the Tag’s reset button

– A CleanSpace account. If you don’t already have one then you can register here.

– To install the latest version of the CleanSpace App available from the App Store or Google Play.

First: Install the app!

– Download the CleanSpace App and install it on your phone.

– Sign in with your CleanSpace account to start using the App.

How to reset & wake the Tag up

– On the side of your Tag, you’ll see a small reset button (this looks like a small hole).

– Reset: use a pen and press the reset button for 8 seconds. This will reset your Tag and put it into Sleep Mode. This will delete any readings on the Tag.

– Wake up: use a pen and press the reset button shortly when prompted to do so from the App. This will cause the LED to light up for about 5 – 7 secs and go off again. This will wake up the Tag and put it into Pairing Mode.

Pair the Tag with your CleanSpace App

1. Make sure your Bluetooth and Wifi/data are on.

2. Open the CleanSpace App.

3. Place your phone close to the Tag.

4. Go to the Pair a Tag button on your home screen.

5. Press the button on the side of the Tag, followed by the ‘Pair now!’ button. It can take up to 30 seconds for the pairing to be completed.

6. When ‘Bluetooth Pairing Request’ appears on your screen press Pair.

7. Wait until the pairing process is 100% complete. You can now see the Tags measurements in the ‘My Air’ section by pressing on My Air button.

8. Now you’re good to go. Just remember that the Tag needs up to 2 hours to calibrate.

CleanSpace Tag intended operation

The Tag takes measurements every 10 minutes if static. If you are on a journey, with tracking enabled within the App, the Tag will automatically increase the measurement frequency in order to provide you with the most accurate data.

5 minutes of 60 second intervals

When the ‘Boost Readings’ button within the app is pressed, the Tagcorder analyses the air around the Tag, and notifies you once the analysis has been carried out, showing detailed readings of air pollution levels from the last five minutes on the Air Graph. To do this press the ‘Boost Readings’ button. After 5 minutes, go to your Air Graph and you will see the results.

Errors / Troubleshooting

When trying to pair with or connecting to your Tag the following errors might appear:

Pairing Error

– Use a pen and press the reset button for about 8 seconds. This will reset your Tag. Then press shortly to put your Tag into pairing mode.

– Press Try Again and follow steps 5-7 in section Pair the Tag with your CleanSpace App

Pairing Error: ‘Pair a CleanSpace Tag’ option still appears in ‘App Settings’ after pairing

– For iOS, you’ll need to first go to Bluetooth settings in your phone. Click on the info icon next to your Tag and choose ‘Forget This Device’.

– Reset the Tag and Wake it up, as shown in How to reset & wake the Tag up! Section, and then follow steps 1-7

Multiple Tags Found

– Make sure that you keep your Tag close to the phone and that there are no other Tags nearby.

– Press Try Again and follow steps 5-7 in section Pair the Tag with your CleanSpace App

Internet Connection Error

– You must be connected to the internet to register your Tag (when you try to Pair).

– Switch on Data services or WIFI on your phone, then Press Try Again and follow steps 1-7 in section Pair the Tag with your CleanSpace App

Bluetooth Turned Off

– Your Bluetooth must be turned on to connect to/pair with your Tag.

– Press Settings and turn your Bluetooth on, then follow steps 1-7 in section Pair the Tag with your CleanSpace App

If you experience any connection errors, go to the Bluetooth Settings in your phone, click on the Info icon next to your Tag and choose ‘Forget this Device’.  Reset the Tag and Wake it up, as shown in How to reset & wake the Tag up section, and then follow steps 1-7.

See your Readings

Go to the ‘Air’ tab and then visit the Air Graph screen to see your data appear – this can take up to 30 seconds.

If you receive the error message ‘No Data Available’ please go back to your home screen and slide the screen down a few times to make sure that the App is updated. Once this is complete, go back to your Air Graph and you should see your data.

  • About CleanSpace

  • What is King's College's involvement in the scheme? »
  • We’re working in a research partnership with the Environmental Research Group at Kings College. Their data and research have been used in the development of the CleanSpace app. We’re also working closely with their scientists along the way to advance their air quality research studies.

  • Where does the air quality data come from? »
  • In London, the data is sourced from the Environmental Research Group at King’s College, London University and fed into the CleanSpace network. In the rest of the UK, the data comes from sensors used by DEFRA to monitor UK air quality.

    We also make a personal air quality sensor, known as a CleanSpace Tag, available for CleanSpace members to buy. This will give them detailed personal air quality information and help us to widen the network and collect even more accurate air quality data.

  • How can I get my work or organisation involved? »
  • We’d love it if you wanted to get your network of friends and family or company involved to help grow the CleanSpace community. If you visit our Community page you can see details of how CleanSpace works and get in contact with us.

  • Who is behind CleanSpace? »
  • CleanSpace is an innovation from Drayson Technologies. We’re a technology company based in London.

  • This is the first time anyone has tried a scheme like ours, so we’re not sure what the impact of our collective efforts will be yet. However, we’re committed to making a change, investing time into analysing the data and improving our technology and updating you on the results and the impact we are all having along the way.

  • About the CleanSpace App

  • What devices are compatible with the CleanSpace App? »
  • The CleanSpace iOS app is supported on iOS 8 or later (We recommend using iPhone 5S or later) Android devices running at least Android 4.4 (KitKat) and where the device has Bluetooth, GPS, Accelerometer and Gyroscope capabilities. To check our list of compatible devices, please visit our Compatibility page. Please note that our App is designed to work with the phones on our list, and will not always work with tablets or other devices.

  • What is a CleanMile? »
  • A CleanMile is simply a mile travelled without causing air pollution. It could be walking, running, or cycling.

  • How are my CleanMiles tracked? »
  • CleanMiles are tracked using location information and sensor readings from your own smartphone device. As long as you have the CleanSpace app running and you have regular access to an internet data-connection, it should automatically record any CleanMiles you make.

  • What happens to my journey data? »
  • The data is collected and processed within the CleanSpace app to create a digital signature of your journey, which allows the app to identify how you have travelled and determine whether your journey qualifies for CleanMiles. Journey data from all CleanSpace members is aggregated by us to create a combined picture of all the journeys. The air quality data enables us to provide useful insights and services to our research and commercial partners. We never share your personal journey data with anyone.

  • How can I access my data? »
  • 1) Directly on the app.

    You’ll be able to see all your journey information from when you first downloaded the app and started travelling, just touch “My Journeys” of the Journeys tab and scroll down.

    2) On the members’ portal from your desktop or tablet device.

  • How can I see what is happening with the data collected by CleanSpace? »
  • We’ll update you as our research develops through the App, via our website and emails. You can also follow us on Twitter and Facebook to hear our latest progress and new partners.

  • How does the app know how I'm travelling? »
  • The data is collected and processed to create a digital signature of your journeys. This digital signature is then classified by software within the CleanSpace app to identify how you have travelled. This software will continue to learn from the data you provide and improve its predictions as you travel. Every journey made using CleanSpace will increase the intelligence of the classification software and help us improve its accuracy and usefulness.

  • What does the Red, Amber, Green scale of Air Quality indicate? »
  • These indicate the quality of the air where you are and identify the level of pollution as being High, Moderate or Low, respectively.

  • Will I be charged for the data I use when the app is on? »
  • CleanSpace uses mobile data as per your standard network charges, but we won’t charge you for data used.

  • About the CleanSpace Tag

  • How does the RAG system work? »
  • The Air Quality Data on the CleanSpace maps uses a Red, Amber Green (“RAG”) system to indicate the air quality at your location and on your journey.

    We use data from the Environmental Research Group at Kings College, London University and condensed it to make it clear to view on the CleanSpace app. More information on the Kings College data and the great work done by the team can be found on their website at www.londonair.org.uk

  • What specifically does the Tag measure? »
  • The Tag measures carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide (CO) is a poisonous gas. It has no smell, and no colour so you can’t see it, smell it or taste it. Therefore you can be breathing it without realising. Breathing carbon monoxide can kill or cause serious health problems and so it is often called the “silent killer”. After breathing carbon monoxide it enters your bloodstream from the lungs and then mixes with part of the red blood cells (haemoglobin) preventing them from properly carrying oxygen around the body, causing the body’s cells to die.

    CO is produced by incomplete combustion of a fuel, so it is important to be aware of the potential dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning. In the UK, about 200 people go to hospital every year with suspected CO poisoning and around 50 people die. CO poisoning can be gradual over a period of time and initial symptoms include headache, dizziness and feeling sick.

    Carbon monoxide outdoors is produced by internal combustion engines, such as diesel and petrol vehicles and is an indicator of overall vehicle pollution, which is made up of a number of pollutants such as small particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and ozone (O3). In general, if carbon monoxide is high it is likely that most of the other pollutants will be high also, depending on the mix of vehicle types on the road, such as the proportion of diesel vehicles.

    Carbon monoxide outdoors is also produced by camp-fires and barbecues. These continue to produce CO even when extinguished and cold to the touch. That is why you should never take a barbecue into a tent or caravan with you – whether it is alight or not.

    Carbon monoxide indoors may be caused by poorly ventilated appliances such as heaters, cookers and boilers or a blocked flue or chimney. The risk of CO poisoning can occur in any enclosed space.

  • How much CO am I exposed to at Low, Moderate or High levels? »
  • The CleanSpace Tag measures the amount of carbon monoxide in the air around the sensor in ppm (parts per million) and shows the data in the Air Graph page in the App. The medium to high thresholds in the CleanSpace App Air Graph have been chosen in relation to the World Health Organisation guidelines of an average limit for 8h exposure to carbon monoxide of 10ppm. The low to medium threshold in the App corresponds to 1.5ppm.

  • How is the data from the Tag going to be shown within the Air Map? »
  • The carbon monoxide measurements from the Tag provide real-time personal information about the air around the sensor. If you have the Tag with you – this is the air that you are breathing. This information is presented in the Air Graph section of the App. The Air Map, next to the Air Graph shows an estimation of outdoors air pollution based on static monitors. The Tag data is merged into the Air Map model, and therefore improves the model for everyone using CleanSpace.

  • Where can I find the most reliable information on CO and its health impacts? »
  • If you want to know more about carbon monoxide and its health impacts further information can be found on the WHO, DEFRA (UK), EEA, EC, EPA (US) and NHS (UK) websites.

  • How does my Tag work with the App? »
  • Your Tag communicates with the app on your phone via Bluetooth. The Tag collects air pollution readings and then uploads them to the app when the information is refreshed. Your Tag will take two hours to calibrate, but 48 hours to fully adapt to your environment, so please ignore any big peaks/troughs that you may see in your Air Graph during this period.

    Please note, your Tag doesn’t track your journeys, it is used to help give you live air pollution updates during your journeys through your Air Graph.

    If you receive the error message ‘No Data Available’ please kill the app, turn Bluetooth off and on, and then re-start the App. You should see data in the next hour.

    Having issues pairing your Tag? It is best to reset the Tag and repeat the pairing process. Don’t forget for iOS you will also need to ‘Forget This Device’ from your phone’s Bluetooth settings first. For more information on pairing, visit ourcleanspace.com/tagsetup.

  • Do I need to charge my Tag or change its batteries? »
  • Fortunately not! You never need to charge it for the life of the device.

  • Can I clean my Tag? »
  • Of course! For the best results you should use a soft, lint-free cloth to clean it. Avoid abrasive cloths or similar items that may cause damage, and don’t use any liquids or aerosol sprays as the moisture may damage the sensor, which sits behind the two tiny holes on the front of the Tag.

  • Can I mount my Tag on a bike? »
  • We positively encourage it! You can attach your Tag in a fixed position – but be careful the Tag doesn’t fall off when you’re on the move as it may break the casing or damage the internal components.

  • How do I store my Tag? »
  • Thats the best bit…you can keep it in a location that suits you! Just don’t use an air-tight bag or it won’t measure the air round you! And please keep your Tag away from liquids as it is not waterproof. The Tag performs best between 0 – 40 degrees Celsius.

  • Troubleshooting

  • Why hasn't my CleanMile been tracked? »
  • You may not have had your location services on. Check the settings on your device. Alternatively you may have the CleanSpace App switched off. Make sure the tracking button within the settings menu is switched to green.

    If we’re still not topping up your CleanMiles it may be a technical problem. Please let our team know at support@ourcleanspace.com so that we can try to get it fixed as soon as possible.

  • How can I opt out of emails or push messages? »
  • We love updating you on what’s coming next in CleanSpace and the impact we’re having. We’ll try not to bombard you with emails or push messages, but if you’d like to stop receiving our messages then just go to your profile on the website, click on settings and let us know how you’d like to be kept in the loop.

  • How do I log out? »
  • If you go to the menu there is an option to logout of your CleanSpace profile on your devic

  • How do I delete my account? »
  • You can uninstall the app via your device’s usual process, and you can delete your account by contacting our team support@ourcleanspace.com

  • I'm not receiving live air quality data? »
  • This may be an issue with your connection or signal. Please check your internet and network connection in your phone settings. If you are still not getting updated data then please contact us at support@ourcleanspace.com so that we can sort out the problem.

  • How can I reduce battery consumption? »
  • You may find the CleanSpace app reduces your phone’s battery life. We are working to fix this, in the meantime we recommend turning your tracking off when you are at rest. Do this by sliding Tracking to Off in the settings menu.

    Please make sure your phone’s Apps are set to automatically update, so that you will always be using the newest version of the CleanSpace App.

  • I’m not receiving data from my Tag in the Air Graph? »
  • If you receive the error message ‘No Data Available’ please kill the app, turn Bluetooth off and on, and then re-start the App. You should see data in the next hour.

  • I'm having issues pairing my Tag? »
  • It is best to reset the Tag and repeat the pairing process. Don’t forget for iOS you will also need to ‘Forget This Device’ from your phone’s Bluetooth settings first. For more information on pairing, visit ourcleanspace.com/tagsetup
